Student Commonwealth Conference, St.Michael's University School, Victoria.

  February, 2010

From the President's Desk

We enjoyed a very musical Christmas luncheon and a productive January general meeting where we introduced a new format of membership for persons unable to attend luncheons. This gives “Friend of the Commonwealth” for a minimum tax deductable $ 20.00 donation information of events and the newsletter plus supporting our endeavors. This does not include voting & other regular membership privileges.

The Student Commonwealth Conference was very interesting watching the well informed pairs representing their chosen Commonwealth country’s views on the subject of “Small Arms Trade” and “Children in Conflict”. Having to follow the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) format using consensus to come to agree       unanimously using the established rules enforced by last years winners, Kirsten Macleod & Ross Prager. This year’s winners are,   Eric Protzer & Chris Groot. We have asked them to speak about their May 2-7, Ottawa experience to us upon returning to Victoria.        Dagmar & I will be attending the National AGM in St. John’s, Newfoundland/Labrador..  Our effort to interest the schools in teaching students about the Commonwealth has had so far only one response. We have no longer an obligation to pay membership fees to London.
